Geograph upload gap[edit]

I've just noticed that there's a gap of about 19,000 pictures in uploads from Geograph Britain and Ireland between 1780732 and 1800000. See this Quarry query. Maybe you could have GeographBot go back and fill it in? --bjh21 (talk) 10:32, 7 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I stumbled across another block of missed pictures, so I've made a different version of the query. This one searches for all blocks of 1000 geograph IDs where fewer than 800 of them are present on Commons (limited to somewhere below where GeographBot is currently working). I think you should get a duplicate-archive warning if you try to upload a file that's identical to one that's been deleted. And also a was-deleted warning if you use the same name it had before. Upload CC-BY 4.0 images of CC0 paintings[edit]

Hi, a local museum has recently started uploading high-res pictures of paintings in their collection. Most of them are CC0 due to the date of death of the creator. However, the photographs of the pictures themselves are pulished under CC-BY 4.0. I am under the impression that your bot automatically flags the uploaded media as CC0 which, I think, should not be done for the images my this case. Is it possible to use your bot for such images? @FbrG: great that they are contributing to Commons! You seem to be mixing up copyright status and the license a bit. Happens all the time because it's quite complicated.

First we have the original work, for example a painting. If the painter died more than 70 years ago it's in the public domain in Germany and if it's published more than 95 years ago it's also public domain in the USA. So that's the combination to look for. So all the painters who died before 1928 are public domain and good to go here on Commons.

Second part is the license. When you take a photograph, you're the copyright holder of that photograph. Taking a photograph of a 2D work of art (like a painting) doesn't add new copyright in the USA, but might in other countries (like Germany) so we add a fallback license to cover that case. This is all described at Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag.

Let's take Half-length Portrait of a Man in Armor (Q117047976): painting by Wilhelm Trübner as an example. The original painting is in the public domain due to age. I updated the image and added the relevant PD-art tag.

If we take Portrait of J. Giessler (Q117048947): painting by Willy Oeser as another example. The original painting is still in copyright until 2037 because the painter died in 1966.

So that means that the underlying work of File:Bildnis von J. Giessler - Willy Oeser - Augustiner M Freiburg.png is still in copyright so the museum can't license it, because it's not in the public domain and I doubt they did a copyright transfer with the painter or heirs. Regarding the artwork Portrait of J. Giessler (Q117048947): painting by Willy Oeser, the description on the museum page states that the painting was gifted to the museum by a heir of the portraied person. But i guess this has little to do with transferring the rights to the museum? Maybe its a mistake on their behalf for publishing it under CC-BY 4.0, as all other images where the creator died before 1953 are still copyrighted.

For the other image that shows up in your query, no date of death can be found for the creator Hermann Eder (Q95274189): . However, given his date of birth and life expectancy at the time i would say it is reasonable to assume that he died before 1953. FbrG (talk) 10:57, 19 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Mdaniels5757: catching up (I thought I replied to you already). The whole workflow described at d:Wikidata:WikiProject sum of all paintings/Automated image uploads is focused on having all the data on Wikidata. In this context I don't care that much about the description. If people want to read the description from the museum, they can click the link and read it at the museum website. We shouldn't just be copying everything over. If you look at current uploads, you'll notice it's even less wikitext. Next step is probably the copyright and license information in structured data to get to this point.

It's probably because of the template soup like for example on File:Loewe frontal.JPG. It is a quality image, but doesn't have the template, instead it uses {{Assessments}}

What exactly is your issue with Category:Stereo cards in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam‎ being in Category:Stereo cards by source? Like I said, it's a distinction without a purpose. You can go up more level to Category:Stereo images by source and there's plenty of categories in that one are exactly the same kind of categories. @Adamant1: See Commons:Categories#Major_categories. Category:Stereo cards in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam‎ is the topical category for stereo cards that are in the collection of the Rijksmuseum. So where they are.

Category:Stereo cards by source is in the Category:Media by source tree for who provided the files. That's a different angle. Not all images of stereo cards in the Rijksmuseum are provided by the Rijksmuseum.

Would it be possible to configure the bot to tag files I've created with creator (P170) Minh Nguyễn (Q69873076) instead of creator (P170) somevalue / Wikimedia username (P4174) Mxn, perhaps based on the presence of Minh Nguyễn (Q69873076) Wikimedia username (P4174) Mxn on Wikidata? Broadly speaking, when there's a Wikidata item about the creator, it would be more stable than a Wikimedia user name that could potentially change. Thanks! Changing "location" to "location of creation"[edit]

Your bot changed a lot of data from "location" to "location of creation". This change does meet the point the data. Could you kindly change it back into "located in" (P706). This was the aim of the label "location". Please use your bot to place the intended label.

The statements in the structured data apply to the photo, not to the object you see in it. In case of File:Schillerstraße 15 GlienickeNordbahn 2020 NE.jpg, the house is located in Glienicke/Nordbahn (Q585248), not the photo. The photo was only created in Glienicke/Nordbahn (Q585248). Making GeographBot requests?[edit]

Hi,

I'm not sure if here's the place to ask - I will comment that Commons:Batch uploading/Geograph doesn't seem to have anywhere on it - but is there a way to request the GeographBot to upload a selection of Geograph images? I've tried to set aside user James T M Towill's Cumbria Easter Rally 2023 photos, even setting aside a Commons category for it, but I've found that uploading those individually and having to manually input all the copyright, date, time and especially location data for each file is going to be an infuriatingly slow process. As you can see on my Flickr2Commons alt, I've done this manually on occasion for one or two other Geograph photos, but I simply don't have the time, nor the geographic knowledge of Cumbria, to do this batch of about ten rally photos.

Seeing as how the GeographBot is a bit stuck in the realm of photos uploaded in 2015 at the minute, it looks likely that the photos probably won't be uploaded for quite a while yet - I'll ask again, is there a way of requesting the bot to upload a specific batch of photos instead of having to go through user input for some of the most recent uploads? @Hullian111: Have you found the "reuse" link under each photo on Geograph? It leads to a page that has a link (labelled "directly upload this picture to Wikimedia Commons" at the bottom that should fill in everything on Special:Upload apart from the categories. @Hullian111 and Bjh21: I'm happy to see you found a solution together. Geograph has 7.4M images, we have 4.6M images so about 2.8M more to go. Based on these statistics, the bot uploads about 100.000 a month so about 28 months of uploading left to get to april 2023. So I guess we'll be in sync somewhere in 2025? Editing recent Geograph photos[edit]

Hi Multichill - I was trying to add details of the bird depicted in File:Beach at Brighton - geograph.org.uk - 2267277.jpg, but when I opened the edit window, all it had was "{{Geograph from structured data}}" (your creation, it seems!) with no infobox, and my addition (see the file's history) didn't end up in the right place. How do I edit it to add this information so it shows in the normal manner in an infobox? Should it be added to Category:Media missing infobox template, too? @ChristiaanPR: you need to make your comments at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Epizykloiden.png, not here, or the closing admin probably won't see them. Also, if you want to upload an improved version, just do it by uploading a new version over the old one. It looks like you already did so at least once (although, really, to change language in labels you should upload under a new file name: remember that people are allowed to embed files outside of WMF projects, and we have no way to know where else this might be in use; this might not be an "improvement" to some German-language website that is using this). . - Jmabel ! talk 18:41, 18 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I would like to inform you that the site of the Kunsthistorisches museum has published other historical portraits. are you by any chance managing the bot? because if that were the case I would like to let you know about the site updates, because taking a tour of the site I noticed that there are new portraits that it would be nice to see them uploaded by that bot if it were possible?? :) I notice that as a "defect" in the categories, it only puts the name of the museum with that of the artist, but not that of the portrayed subject...
