Media Viewer in categories[edit]

Hello, is it possible to use the Media Viewer in a category? I only see the green button for the old, ugly Slideshow. NaBUru38 (talk) 21:50, 25 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I think Media Viewer is disabled by default on Commons, but you can enable it by visiting the "Appearance" tab of the preferences page and turning on "Enable Media Viewer". Then, clicking an image in a category will open it in the Media Viewer. --bjh21 (talk) 19:58, 26 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you very much! It works perfectly. I would argue to activate it by default. --=NaBUru38 (talk) 23:08, 1 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Absolutely not. For those of us who actually do things on Commons, as against being here to browse, Media Viewer is useless or worse. No problem with other people wanting to use it, but it absolutely should not be the default for logged-in users. - Jmabel ! talk 02:50, 2 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
While I would argue, that Commons is for uploading files (and serving them to Wikipedia and InstantCommons sites) only, actually Commons is a repositories for stock fotos and the MediaViewer is (in absence of better ways to actually browse a category) a very useful tool to choose an image for reuse. I added a user template to some of my images to be able to forward from on image in a series to the next, but there is no generic function to do this - with the MediaViewer closest to achieve the same result (compare images than make edits to them). Is there any way to get in touch with a Meta admin here?[edit]

I just need a Meta admin to delete this page of mine: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Mayfair_Rose/common.js so I can log back in again on Meta. Mayfair Rose (talk) 19:54, 30 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Edit: I left a message on the talkpage of that page (as an IP), so maybe they'll see that and delete the page. Mayfair Rose (talk) 20:04, 30 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Mayfair Rose I've added the appropriate template to m:User talk:Mayfair Rose/common.js, so it will be in the appropriate category and the admins will take a look at it. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 20:13, 30 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Bonjour,
Cordialement, Yann (talk) 10:40, 2 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question About Quality Images[edit]

I have a picture that I am currently nominating for Featured Picture here. However, yesterday I just discovered the less rigorous Quality Image process and am wondering if it's okay to have a pitured nominated for both titles at once. Mayfair Rose (talk) 16:13, 2 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @Mayfair Rose: A relatively small number of people are involved in the process of selecting Featured Pictures and Quality Images. I doubt anyone else can speak for them. Did you check the listed rules and see if there was anything saying you could not nominate for both at the same time? - Jmabel ! talk 21:22, 2 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I don't recall seeing anything in the rules against it, so I'll read over the rules one more time and if there's nothing I'll go ahead and nominate for Quality Image. Mayfair Rose (talk) 21:31, 2 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Copyright help regarding File:Uscg traning.jpg and File:Uscg 6-9 logo.jpg[edit]

I got both of the pitures from the offical website from the miltary unit. I asked on a wikipifa talk page and they said pitures from DOD and DHS are in the public domain. What should I do to fix the copyright? --LuxembourgLover (talk) 17:40, 2 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I've added licenses to both of the files, and also put in the License Review template. Abzeronow (talk) 18:49, 2 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question regarding city logo uploading[edit]

I am currently modifing a little village page from my region. They recently changed the crest to a new modern logo. Can I upload the logo in question? I am of course not the creator of the image. Thanks! JDumont004 (talk) 19:10, 2 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Probably not, but it would help if you name the village, and give a link to the logo. Yann (talk) 19:11, 2 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
-- Asclepias (talk) 20:37, 2 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Photos for wikipedia page[edit]

I have several photos I'd like to upload to a wikipedia page. Do I have to upload them to WikiCommons first? They include a headshot and some photos taken at parties/ banquets. Thanks - Leslie WikiLeslie53 (talk) 22:18, 2 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You have to upload them to Commons only. Then you can use them everywhere. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 22:29, 2 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you! WikiLeslie53 (talk) 22:57, 2 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@WikiLeslie53: This all assumes that either you own the copyright (and will grant a free license) or the images are already free-licensed. Commons only accepts images that are in the public domain (unlikely in this case) or are free-licensed. - Jmabel ! talk 00:39, 3 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Why will someone sell my picture or write up with out my permission?[edit]

Why will someone sell my picture or write up with out my permission? EasyG7 (talk) 23:44, 2 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @EasyG7: this might happen for all sorts of reasons. For example, they might want to use the content in a book, or they might want to use it for purely aesthetic reasons as part of a photomosaic, or they might want to offer it as a stock photo. Assuming it is free-licensed and they abide by the terms of the license, they may do so. Is there something more specific you are asking? - Jmabel ! talk 00:44, 3 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@EasyG7 It is not clear from your question what this is about. Did someone upload a picture of you against your will? Or did you upload a picture here (obviously not, at least not with the newly created account?) If there is a picture here that either shows you or that you took: Either you have provided this picture with a free licence in one way or another (e.g. on Flickr), then you yourself have agreed that this picture can be used by everyone and also can be sold by anyone. However, if you have not granted such a licence, then this image must be deleted here because it does not have a free licence. In this case, you can submit a deletion request. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 07:46, 3 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Upload Question[edit]

Hi: I have been a "user" with "Wiki Commons" for a number of years.

Trade and Mr. Yann have been very helpful to me recently. Q: How to proceed to upload images to this specific category:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Stable_Diffusion_works_by_Commons_users

I use "Stable Diffusion" and other "AI Art' platforms in art collaborations. I use Adobe platforms and a number of others in my illustrations. I appreciate everyone's help with this. I would like to upload my images to this category for consideration. A growing number of writers are using my illustrations for their blogs. Regards, David S. Soriano 130.49.20.56 16:32, 3 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • I assume you are User:David S. Soriano, whose account has been blocked for repeatedly uploading out-of-scope artwork even after several clear warnings. If so, coming here while not logged in is a violation of your block. User:Trade has been in communication with you on your user talk page -- the only page you should be accessing while blocked -- to further discuss this with you. I strongly recommend that you abide by the block. I would not like to have to extend the block or to block your IP address, but I will if you continue to violate it. - Jmabel ! talk 18:02, 3 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I told David he should ask permission before uploading more art pictures in the future. I didnt meant for him to use his IP to bypass the block Trade (talk) 18:40, 3 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You do not upload to a category. You upload to Commons. In the Upload process you can (and should) add one or more categories to the file description. Categories can later be added or removed by you and by anyone. Files are not "considered". They are either free licensed and in scope or else get deleted. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 18:06, 3 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Categories[edit]

What are the rules for categories that are basically empty on this wiki? I've came across a category that has two subcategories, one being itself. The category itself is also incorrectly categorised. --Ferien (talk) 21:00, 3 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Ferien: So you've run across a mess. Care to say where? There are some maintenance categories that should be kept even if they are empty, but typically any category that is empty more than briefly should be deleted. - Jmabel ! talk 22:54, 3 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Jmabel, it's Category:Items numbered 3479. --Ferien (talk) 09:36, 4 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Ferien: Categories can have few items or a single item if it fits into the category tree of the topic and if it's not overcategorization. When part of a particular series, categories tend to be exhaustive and not leave subcategories uncategorized. For the category you mentioned, the self-inclusion is the result of a mistake in the introductory template by the user who created the category. It can be fixed by removing the parameter "|nomi=bus routes" and that will also categorize the category in parent categories. -- Asclepias (talk) 11:11, 4 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Exactly. That self-inclusion was an error, but the category is not empty. It has subcats, which in turn contain images. - Jmabel ! talk 14:50, 4 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Alright. There's a rule on my homewiki that you must have three entries in a category and imo, categories with just one subcategory are generally fairly pointless so was checking here for what should be done with it. Thank you for fixing it. --Ferien (talk) 17:02, 4 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Is an image with only a fragment (in this case a hand) of a person, cropped from a Flickr image licensed under a creative commons license (consent is *assumed*) acceptable? I'm referring to the first revision of File:Linishing.jpg; I uploaded it but now have concerns. Thanks, Edward-Woodrow (talk) 23:14, 3 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Edward-Woodrow: I can't see anything there that even borders on being a problem. What are you concerned with? - Jmabel ! talk 00:36, 4 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Fixing multiple categories which should not have been moved[edit]

This isn't the most important thing in the world, but I wonder if I could have help tidying up (undoing misguided previous tidying by a since-banned user) regarding a number of U.S. w:NRHP-listed historic districts categories and their contents. (I thought this was going to be a bigger request, but it has come down to asking for help on just three.)

Background: The commons categories corresponding to w:Winnsboro Commercial Historic District and a number of other U.S. NRHP-listed historic districts of format "TOWN-OR-CITY Commercial Historic District" were, inexplicably, moved by User:Wikilester 2, a since-banned user blocked by User:Majora, back in 2018, to names of format "Commercial Historic District (TOWN-OR-CITY, STATE)". I see in their contributions history they made numerous other questionable moves, but for now I just want to fix the ones of this type.

Looking now at a list of most NRHP historic districts (using this NRHP-related external tool which covers NRHP listings up to 2013) with "Commercial Historic District" in their name, I see there are just two (in Potlatch, Idaho and in Pikeville, Kentucky) which were literally named "Central Historic District" so their Wikipedia articles and Commons categories should be of format "Commercial Historic District (TOWN-OR-CITY, STATE)". But there are hundreds of others of the "TOWN-OR-CITY Commercial Historic District" format, and their Wikipedia articles are that format name, too. Perhaps User:Wikilester 2 thought they were tidying things up nicely by making moves to what they thought were "correct" names, but their moves simply made a mess, IMHO, here and for other types of moves they made. It doesn't make sense to me for commons categories names of historic districts to be different than their Wikipedia names.

For example, corresponding to the uniquely named w:Winnsboro Commercial Historic District, the user moved commons category:Winnsboro Commercial Historic District to category:Commercial Historic District (Winnsboro, Louisiana), and a redirect was left behind. For that one, I just recategorized all the photos to use the original name, which is the actual literal name of the NRHP-listed historic district, and I tried "moving" the category but could not do that myself, and then instead I reversed the move by copy-pasting, and copy-pasted in the reverse redirect.

Request 1 & 2: I reviewed their contributions history and I would like to undo their other moves of this type, i.e.:

Request 3: I see that a similarly named editor User:Wikilester 3 (who has not been blocked?) is responsible for another:

After reviewing and making edits that I could make, now nothing needs to be done for:

Can the remaining three sets of moves/renames of categories and of their contents be done efficiently, somehow? I have "FileMover" rights but I myself cannot move these categories, and I don't know how to batch-recategorize their contents.

If these moves can be made in Commons, I can do all the corresponding updates of commons category links in Wikipedia.

--Doncram (talk) 23:46, 3 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Doncram: In cases like this where you are moving all of the content of a category, use CommonsDelinker. As a non-admin, you can put in requests at User talk:CommonsDelinker. This will even move category itself, and moves both subcats and files. Only two provisos
  • If (as in some of these cases) you want to move to a category name that is currently a soft or hard redirect, delete the redirect first.
  • Use this only for changes that should be uncontroversial.
Unless I'm mistaken, as a filemover, you can't delete the category redirects. If you'll just make a list here of the category redirects you want deleted (the ones that will be the new categories), I'll delete those. You can ping me here to do those deletions, and to act immediately on your requests at User talk:CommonsDelinker. - Jmabel ! talk 00:49, 4 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

User:Jmabel, thank you! Request put in at User talk:CommonsDelinker. --Doncram (talk) 01:01, 4 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Doncram: If you want to do something like this again, please the instructions on that talk page about how to make a request, but I'll do my best to follow up from what you wrote. - Jmabel ! talk 01:07, 4 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Should go some time in the next few hours. - Jmabel ! talk 01:17, 4 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks. The instructions there and at linked pages are terse, and/or I arrived with misunderstandings. I totally appreciate all of your help, but you did say "use CommonsDelinker", and "As a non-admin, you can put in requests at User talk:CommonsDelinker" while in fact I gather that instead I am supposed to put requests on the Talk pages of categories. Terseness there includes that they presume a requestor knows a "move" is a "rename" and also what Commons DeLinker does. At the first page I didn't see any mention of a "category move" there. I see now that I could have gone from there to find instructions for a "category rename", and that it amounts to making a bot request by putting, on the talk page of the category I want moved, a filled-out version of the template {{move cat|Old name|New name|3=Explanation|user=Your username}} I think it's not clearly stated that a category rename request has the effect of getting all the contents recategorized. I dunno if fulfillment of these requests also has the effect of updating Wikidata, and I don't care really, but maybe that could be mentioned. Copying this info to a page of mine, for future reference.
I just finished, knock on wood, making all the changes in Wikipedia of the commons category names.
So, lastly, could you please delete the related category redirects (and maybe you have to wait for three of these):
category:Commercial Historic District (Winnsboro, Louisiana)
Category:Commercial Historic District (Pipestone, Minnesota)
Category:Commercial Historic District (Patterson, Louisiana)
Category:Commercial Historic District (Ferriday, Louisiana)
Category:Commercial Historic District (Bremen, Indiana)
Category:Commercial Historic District (El Dorado, Arkansas)
Category:Commercial Historic District (Brunswick, Maine)
Thanks for everything! --Doncram (talk) 01:35, 4 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Usually we keep redirects like this that have been around for a few years so users who've been used to putting them on photos don't get taken by surprise. - Jmabel ! talk 02:32, 4 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Dr. Zaverbhai H. Patel PhD. Quitesage (talk) 05:35, 6 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You cannot. Here at commons you can upload media files. If you have a text, it may qualify for wikibooks or wikiversity, but it is neither for Wikipedia nor for commons. On Wikipedia you can write and edit new and existing articles. For your own use you can export arcticles from Wikipedia as PDF-file. But it does not make sense to upload a text, that already exists at Wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by C.Suthorn (talk • contribs) 08:03, 6 July 2023‎ (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Quitesage: Also: be aware that in general you should not be writing articles about people with whom you have a strong connection (most notably yourself). See en:WP:COI. - Jmabel ! talk 14:40, 6 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Uploading images[edit]

Hello, Flickr was listed as one of the resources to be used to find images that can then be used on Commons. Is every image on the website in the public domain and therefore exempt from fair use? I assumed so, but several images I have posted to Commons from Flickr have been deleted because of this. Also screenshots from YouTube videos; if a channel can upload a video that is under copyright, why can't an image be screenshot from the video, cropped and then posted on Wikipedia Commons? Or is it just a matter of not inputing enough information whenever I go to upload photos? ZanderAlbatraz1145 (talk) 06:18, 6 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Flickr displays the license of every image on Flickr together with the image. If the Flickr user has choosen a free license, you can upload it to Commons, otherwise not. YouTube lets uploaders choose between two licenses: The standard YouTuobe license and a free Creative Commnons license. If it is the Creative Commons license you can upload the video or a derivative work ot the video or screenshots from the video, otherwise not. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 07:59, 6 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
How do you tell if the user has chosen a 'free license' for the image? On Flickr, one of the images I had previously uploaded has an All Rights Reserved tag, as well as the Rights number listed in the description. At the bottom, it also says the Viewing Privacy is Public and the 'Safety Level' is 'Safe'. Does that mean anything to you? Or, again, is it just a matter of me failing to input that information when initially uploading the photo. ZanderAlbatraz1145 (talk) 06:18, 6 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@ZanderAlbatraz1145: The tag, right under the photo zone, tells the status of the photo. For details, see the page Commons:Flickr files. "All rights reserved" is not a free license. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:27, 7 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The only relevance of Flickr's 'Viewing Privacy' and 'Safety Level' to us is that our tools to upload from Flickr can only see photos that are 'Public' and 'Safe'. 'Viewing Privacy' = 'Public' means and 'Safety Level' = 'Safe' just means any Flickr user (logged in or not) can see the image on Flickr; not limited to a specific viewership, and not limited by the "safety" settings that let logged-in users choose to see nude and sexual images. - Jmabel ! talk 18:28, 7 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Batch overwriting a recent batch upload[edit]

Hi all, I'm in touch with people from a cultural organization which has recently done a small-ish batch upload here on Wikimedia Commons. They accidentally uploaded quite small files (their uploads of 2 and 3 May 2023, specifically), and they would like to batch overwrite these with the high-quality/large version. I understood that a script would be needed for this, as there are no tools (eg Pattypan, OpenRefine) that allow overwriting files in batch like this. What would the procedure be for this organization? Is this a good place to ask for this help? (I've asked @Multichill in person, and have also started asking on Telegram - but having this conversation documented on wiki is a good way to document the procedure for future occurrences!) Thank you! Spinster (talk) 10:25, 6 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Would Pywikibot be a suitable tool for this? --Zentralbibliothek Zürich (talk) 11:14, 6 July 2023 (UTC) ^anwReply[reply]
There are several available tools, mostly depending on technical competences and how is your metadata (database, spreadsheet files, plain text files, etc.). After trying OpenRefine, I chose Pywikibot, as the metadata I use is rather plain text than a database. Pywikibot can be run from a local PC or from a Toolforge account. Yann (talk) 11:29, 6 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
With reuploads the "description" part of the upload is ignored by the MW software, so any upload tool that can do reuplaods will be fine (basically the tool only needs to have a switch to ignore warnings). C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 11:35, 6 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Can I get a copy of a semi-protected Template?[edit]

We use Wikipedia on government sites, but don't have a copy of Template:Ordered list, and when I try to view it, it's semi-protected. Is there a way to view/download the template? The copy we have only contains the list-style-type|decimal. Thanks! Jbkalla (talk) 12:38, 6 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The page Template:Ordered list is just
 {{<includeonly>safesubst:</includeonly>#invoke:list|ordered}}<noinclude>
 {{documentation}}
<!-- Categories go on the /doc subpage, and interwikis go on Wikidata. -->
 </noinclude>
So there's really not much to it. - Jmabel ! talk 14:46, 6 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Copyright help regarding File:Blm-maduro.jpg[edit]

Hello I just uploaded the same picture and was able to get the original author (Embassy of Venezuela to the United States), as well as website. @Arobinson1987: why do you believe this image is either in the public domain or free-licensed? Commons only accepts images that meet one of those two criteria. - Jmabel ! talk 14:48, 6 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I believe it's public domain, because on the flickr link it states that the viewing privacy is "public". Arobinson1987 (talk) 14:58, 6 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Could you link to the Flickr page that gives information on the photograph? I can't check the license for the current source link provided. Abzeronow (talk) 16:28, 6 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I suppose it is this photo, all rights reserved. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:51, 6 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yeah, I speedied it. @Arobinson1987: if a Flickr page says All Rights Reserved, we normally cannot host those here. Abzeronow (talk) 16:58, 6 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Arobinson1987: being publicly visible is not the same as being in the public domain! Otherwise, everything you see on the Internet would be in the public domain. I strongly recommend you read public domain before uploading any other work that is not something you yourself created, or you are really likely to get yourself in trouble. - Jmabel ! talk 17:59, 6 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Creating my page[edit]

I am new to this site. I am 88 years of age. My questions are:

1. How to enter my bio information to appear at this site? 2. During COVID I wrote a book of poetry and some country music songs. The book was published and some of the songs were recorded in Franklin/Nashville, TN. How do I show those accomplishments at this site?

The book and all songs I have written are copy-written and I am the exclusive owner. Evidence of that is available if you need it.

Thanks Southernsound (talk) 18:59, 7 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Southernsound: Short version: it sounds like you intend to use this site for self-promotion which is not allowed.
Just in case you are not aware, "this site" is Wikimedia Commons, a media repository (not a collection of biographies or other articles). We don't have "articles" on any topic, unless you count the pages about our own policies, guidelines, etc.
In case you were thinking of the English-language Wikipedia, our sister project, this wouldn't be welcome there either. If you want an explanation of why not, see en:WP:AUTOBIOGRAPHY and en:WP:COI. - Jmabel ! talk 22:33, 7 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How to remove incorrect original portrait drawing so that the right one (a later, correct version) remains[edit]

This file: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Taylor_(music_writer)#/media/File:Edward_Taylor_(1784-1863).jpg

Wrongly used images online[edit]

Hello! When someone uses my images from Wikimedia Commons, licensed CC-BY-SA 4.0, but fails to credit my name or link to / write the license, can I send them an invoice for it or raise other legal actions? What does Commons do to reduce wrong use of images? If I don't even get credited as the photographer, and people use the photos just like they've taken them, it really reduces my motivation to keep on contributing. Regards, Vasmar1 | Marius Vassnes (talk) 17:44, 8 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @Vasmar1: Yes, that is absolutely a copyright violation. If they used them online, you should probably first just ask that they fix it. If they used it in print, it's too late to fix it, and you have every right to sue. Similarly if they used it online and refuse to fix it. - Jmabel ! talk 19:50, 8 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
See also Commons:Enforcing license terms. All the best with this. FotoFree (talk) 20:49, 8 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Hi Vasmar1. Commons can't really give you any legal advice other than what's written in COM:ENFORCE. Similarly, Commons can suggest that the reusers of Commons content follow COM:REUSE, but it can't force them to do so. One thing you might try is a en:DMCA takedown notice, but you might want to ask a lawyer who deals with intellectual property rights for more details about that. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:06, 9 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Genabab: Commons doesn't accept fair use content of any type per COM:FAIR; so, you wouldn't be allowed to be uploaded such content here. Some local Wikipedia's, however, do allow fair use content to be uploaded and used, but usually it's subject to quite a lot of restrictions, which are even more restrictive in many cases than fair use. You can find out more about English Wikipedia policy regarding such content at en:Wikipedia:Non-free content and en:Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria. -- Marchjuly (talk) 10:56, 9 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Suggestion[edit]

It would be helpful if there is a button with each image that can filter out images that require attribution. I reuse images in videos, and so there is no easy way to give credit. If when I put in a search term, I can filter out everything except those things that say "attribution not required," it would make content creation faster and easier. Then I would be sure that the images that came up in the search are free to use in a video or in a venue where it is difficult or or "clunky-looking" to give a credit link. As it is, I have to go through the images image-by-image and check the credit requirement. I don't know the technology involved in doing that, but if it is possible, it would make searching a whole lot easier. Thank you. 75.111.219.108 14:53, 9 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You are a bit of an edge case in looking only for images that do not require credits. And, also: this is at least partly about you staying technically legal while ignoring all courtesy requests for credit by institutional providers of PD images (e.g. museums, archives, etc.). I personally can't see us going out of our way to help someone do that. - Jmabel ! talk 16:40, 9 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It is just as easy giving credits on a video as it is giving credit other places you would use the image. Regards Vasmar1 | Marius Vassnes (talk) 19:24, 9 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Vasmar1: no, it is actually harder in a video. Adding titles is a pain in the butt. But it's really not our (Commons') job to solve a problem like that. People have all sorts of special-case criteria on what licenses (or even which PD justifications) work well for them and what don't, and solving this for them is not a role we've taken on, any more than walking them through trademark issues. - Jmabel ! talk 00:51, 10 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jmabel: I disagree. I have been doing video-editing for some years too, and it's not really "a pain in the butt". Do it one time and use that as a template for the rest of the video. Some editing programs also have already made templates, ie. for giving photo-credit. I agree with the part that it's not something Commons is supposed to help with either way, and IMO a photo should always be credited. Sub-categories[edit]

In uploading an image, how do I add a sub-category to the list of categories? Bmzuckerman (talk) 21:09, 9 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Bmzuckerman: From the list of your contributions, I guess you have been trying to create a new category, named "Hamilton Web Company" or "Hamilton web company". If so, 1) go to one place where you wrote that red category link, for example your list of contributions, or add that red category link again to one of your files, 2) click on that red link, 3) in the edit box, insert the links to the parent categories of which your new category should be a member, for example Category:Textile mills in Rhode Island, 4) preview, 5) publish, 6) add the new category to the relevant files. You can see the page Commons:Categories for details. If that's no what your question was about, then please specify with an example. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:56, 9 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks, Asclepias, for your prompt assistance. While following your tips, I succeeded in creating a new category for "Hamilton Web Company." However that did not show up where I really want it -- as a sub-category listing at the top of an existing category, such as "Textile Mills in Rhode Island." Further advice? Bmzuckerman (talk) 22:35, 9 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Edit the page of the new "Category:Hamilton Web Company" and format the links to the parent categories in double brackets, for example: [[Category:Textile mills in Rhode Island]]. Use the exact name, for example note the lowercase in the word "mills" in that category. Also, please revert your edit [2] to "Category:Textile mills in Rhode Island". It's the other way around. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:18, 9 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

List of governors of Portuguese India in Portuguese - unable to load picture[edit]

I am trying to prepare a talk based on this list which, in the Portuguese but not the English version, includes portraits of the majority of the governors. My starting point was Lopo Vaz de Sampaio (Sampaio) (listed as 6th governor in English version and 8th version in Portuguese version). In this list there is no picture of him. There are pictures of him in Wikipedia articles on him (different pictures in English and Portuguese versions) but not in the listing where there is a message saying file under preparation. I have tried to upload a picture of him from Wikipedia Commons but get a message saying I am not authorised. What can I do? Milbern (talk) 00:53, 10 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Milbern: I assume this is about pt:Lista de governadores da Índia Portuguesa. And are we talking about File:Lopo Vaz de Sampaio (Archaeological Survey of India, Goa).png or some other photo? Milbern, when you ask a question like this you have a lot better chance to get help if you link the things you are talking about. - Jmabel ! talk 01:07, 10 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you so much. I appreciate being able to refer people to the Wikipedia list and the person with whom I started my talk being in there as opposed to them being the only one missing in the first twenty.
I would still like to know how to do things like this myself. Is there a simple guide somewhere?
And thanks again. Milbern (talk) 15:13, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I see what happened. In pt:Lista de governadores da Índia Portuguesa you said you want File:Lopo_Vaz_de_Sampaio.jpg, but there is no such file! You have to use the name of a file that actually exists. - Jmabel ! talk 01:15, 10 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks for the quick response. Sorry. I don't have a clue what I'm doing and I've never tried this before. The list in Portuguese contains portraits of many of the governors. Where there should be a portrait of him there is a box that contains File:Lopo_Vaz_de_Sampaio.jpg. I only clicked on it in the list. I'm not trying to upload a file by that name. I'm just clicking on what is there. If it is not something that exists, why is it there at all? The file that I want to upload is his official 16th Century portrait which appears on his Portuguese Wikipedia page as File:Lopo Vaz de Sampaio (Archaeological Survey of India, Goa).png. as you correctly identified. I thought I had clicked on it and got a message saying that I'm not authorised. I'm probably too stupid to do it correctly. I'm certainly missing some bit of information that will enable me to do it. Milbern (talk) 01:49, 10 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Milbern: The link to File:Lopo_Vaz_de_Sampaio.jpg is likely a remnant since the file used to exist, but was deleted two years ago. MKFI (talk) 08:06, 10 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
OK. Thank you for that information. It does not help me at all. I don't know what I am doing wrong. If the file was deleted two years ago, surely the link should not be visible (then I would not be treated as somebody who is doing something wrong if I click on it). Could somebody who has authority now remove it please?
If I click on the link to the Wikipedia profile in the box next to that it brings up the article with the picture which should be in the box which is what I wanted to load so that the column with illustrations is more complete (and more particularly shows the portrait of the person I want to speak about). Could somebody please tell me how do I get that picture of Lopo Vaz de Sampaio into the box which has the dead link and should have the picture? Thank you. Hi, I need to update the logo on the Findus page, since the one present is an old one and the company wants to update it. I have the logo the company gave me, how can I update it? Utente 1089 (talk) 15:51, 10 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @Utente 1089: I'm assuming by "the Findus page" you mean en:Findus.
  • If the new logo is below the threshold of originality you can upload it to Commons using {{Textlogo}} and {{Trademarked}} in lieu of a license template. If it's above the threshold, then the only way Commons can accept it is if the company will grant a free license (which most companies will not); see COM:L if you want to know more about that, and COM:VRT for how they could provide the license to Commons. In any case, please use a different filename from the current logo, which we would want to keep for historical reasons.
  • Failing either of those, you could upload the logo (again, under a new filename) directly to the English-language Wikipedia on a fair-use basis (we don't allow this on Commons). See en:File:Starbucks Corporation Logo 2011.svg for a good example of how this is done.
  • In any case, once you've done that, edit en:Findus to use the new logo.
  • Also: please see en:WP:COI. It sounds like you are editing the English-language Wikipedia (en-wiki) on a topic where you have an undisclosed connection to the subject of the article. You need to declare that connection, or en-wiki will probably block your account. - Jmabel ! talk 18:05, 10 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Handling duplicate files post cropping[edit]

I cropped an image that I imported from youtube (under the share license) but decided to upload the cropped image as a new separate file (as I thought I needed to keep the source file for verification purposes). Now I have two files, instead of one embedded inside the other.

Should I propose the original file for deletion (and what kind of deletion), OR can they be merged? The file in question is "File:Ueli Steck Les Drus "North Couloir Direct" (VI, Al 6+, M8) 1.png" (original), and "File:Ueli Steck Les Drus "North Couloir Direct" (VI, Al 6+, M8) 1 (cropped).png" (cropped). thanks. Convenience links: File:Ueli Steck Les Drus "North Couloir Direct" (VI, Al 6+, M8) 1.png, File:Ueli Steck Les Drus "North Couloir Direct" (VI, Al 6+, M8) 1 (cropped).png - Jmabel ! talk 21:14, 10 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I personally wouldn't bother doing anything: just use the version you want; the other is harmless. But if you like, you can download the full-res image from File:Ueli Steck Les Drus "North Couloir Direct" (VI, Al 6+, M8) 1 (cropped).png, then upload it as a new version of File:Ueli Steck Les Drus "North Couloir Direct" (VI, Al 6+, M8) 1.png, then nominate File:Ueli Steck Les Drus "North Couloir Direct" (VI, Al 6+, M8) 1 (cropped).png for deletion. - Jmabel ! talk 21:18, 10 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
In this particular case, the uncropped image does not seem useful. You could nominate it for deletion. Or you could leave it. It's not really important. There is no general rule. In other types of situations, it may be different. In some cases, it can be useful to have both images as separate files. In some other cases, it may be useful to upload the original and then overwrite it with the modified version. It depends on the specifics of each situation. I don't think there's any interest to take the time of an admin to merge those two files. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:28, 10 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The one useful thing about the uncropped version is that the time thing at the bottom serves as documentation for where in the video the still was pulled from. - Jmabel ! talk 23:02, 10 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Okay, I will leave both versions in place which seems like the consensus advice. Thanks for all your help on this. Aszx5000 (talk) 11:24, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Aszx5000: If you want to group both versions in the same file, you can still do it with the method mentioned above by Jmabel, overwriting the original version with the cropped version and nominating the other cropped file for deletion. There is one day left for a request for speedy deletion with G7. After that, it can be an ordinary deletion request. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:33, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Can someone please fix this template?[edit]

Hi, I was replying to a comment on one of my nominations for Quality Image, and somehow managed to break the nomination template. I am not quite sure how to rectify it, as I'm new to templates on wikis. If someone could fix it for me, I'd really appreciate it. The nomination is the first one under July 5. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Quality_images_candidates/candidate_list#July_5,_2023 Mayfair Rose (talk) 00:24, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Mayfair Rose: When something like this happens, the best thing to do tends to be to retrace your steps and look for the edit that introduced the error. Most like you accidentally edited the template's syntax and that's causing it to not work as intended. Either you added something that's not needed and the template doesn't know what to do with it, or you removed something that is needed and the template can't find it. If you unable to find the problematic edit, you can revert all of the ones you made back to the last stable version, and try and make the same edit again. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:55, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks for your help. I reverted my edits and will try to figure out how to insert my comment so it doesn't break the template. Mayfair Rose (talk) 01:44, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

copyvio[edit]

why is this a copyvio [3] and [4]??--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 11:58, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

If the images are indeed in PD, there needs to be a correct license tag used. {{CC0}} is only used for images the copyright owner releases to PD. For works that were produced as an official duty of a government employee, PD is automatically assumed, unless stated otherwise or originating from a country that copyrights government works, for which a different license tag is used. Somebody stated that the image source claims copyright and doesn't allow reusing the photo freely, in your talk page, which you swiftly reverted, but kind of forgot that the history is publicly visible. Polda18 D C 12:26, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Ozzie10aaaa: It's not a copyvio, but it's not offered under a CC0 declaration, so it cannot be tagged with a CC0 template. There may be a PD template somewhere for PD CDC journals like this, but I didn't find one with a quick search. There's a CDC template for works of US employees and a template for images from the CDC image library, but they don't do for this. If there is no specific template, you can always use the general template PD-because, and quote in the parameter the PD statement of the journal: "All materials published in Emerging Infectious Diseases, including text, figures, tables, and photographs, are in the public domain and can be reprinted or used without permission with proper citation.[5]". And you can request a license review. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:07, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
ok, thank you both--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 17:31, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Protection[edit]

I could use protection of my user talk page, I'm being harassed with personal attacks by someone I've dealt with on the English Wikipedia. Either that or a range block. 331dot (talk) 12:53, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@331dot: You are probably looking for Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/Blocks and protections. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:32, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
And probably just ask for semi-protection if it doesn't need protection from established users. - Jmabel ! talk 15:27, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Upload updated photo[edit]

Hello, I'd like to upload an updated photo on a Wikipedia page NyamburaM (talk) 17:40, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You do not upload files at Wikipedia. You upload at commons.wikimedia (this site). Which foto do you want to update? It may be a case to upload a new revision, but it is more likely a new foto with a different name. Once it is uploaded (and description and copyright are ok) you can replace it in the article in Wikipedia. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 19:52, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

THEMAAA, you added a CC BY-SA 4.0 license to File:501865 original.jpg. Please provide a link that confirms that this licensing is correct. --Achim55 (talk) 19:39, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
where I can find the license you asked for that picture ?
I already provided the magazine website and their YouTube channel
would you guide me I am new here THEMAAA (talk) 19:51, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Please read COM:L. I cannot find a free license on the naver.com website, and if it doesn't say Creative Commons on Youtube, then it's not under a free license. Abzeronow (talk) 19:56, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You cannot create a free license to use someone else's photo! That's like giving away someone else's money. - Jmabel ! talk 22:00, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Google SOE[edit]

Is there some kind of systemic blockage between a Google search and WikiMedia Commons? I ask because I'm disappointed that the two sets of photos that I recently uploaded to our category of "Textile mills in Rhode Island" do not appear in a Google search for the identical category. In fact, of the hundreds of images that appear when you search Google for "Textile mills in Rhode Island," only three of them (all of the Slater Mill Historic Site) come from WikiMedia Commons -- that is, only three of the 155 images in this WikiMedia category show up in a Google search. Any tips on how to get Google to pay attention to images uploaded to WikiMedia Commons? Bmzuckerman (talk) 20:01, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Do not expect Google necessarily either to scan content as soon as it is uploaded or to favor material from any particular site. - Jmabel ! talk 22:01, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
